Tips for Making Face Frames

workshop hints and tips

The support structure of a cabinet is its face frames. They are made of metal or wood and form the drawer and door openings. The easiest way to attach them is glue and clamps. A strong glue joint is created to hold the two pieces together. While mechanical fasteners may be substituted for clamps, you need to fill the holes in the screws or nails before installing the facial frames. Here are some useful tips for assembling face frames.

Cabinet fronts are strengthened by face frames

A face frame can be added to cabinets to make them appear more professional. You can use them to line up cabinets in rooms that aren't perfectly square. Cut out face frames that are approximately 1/2 inch smaller than your desired cabinet size. Gapping is also an option to square up your cabinets. After you've determined the dimensions of your face frame pieces, order them and then cut them on a tablesaw. Be sure to cut accurately while you are cutting the pieces so that they look nice. Once all the pieces have been assembled, attach each shelf using pocket hole screws of 1-1/4".

They allow for drawer and door openings

Doors, drawers and cabinets can be made more open by using face frames. They are typically made of two materials, wood and metal, and can be glued or screwed into place. To assemble frames, you can use glue and clamps. A strong, permanent attachment is possible with a tight glue joint. If clamps are too difficult to use, you can use mechanical fasteners. Fill in all nail and screw holes.

They can also be made from metal or wood

A face frame is a framework made up of horizontal and vertical pieces. The face frame is attached to the front of a case. It has rails and inner/outer stiles that reach up to the frame. The frame is attached to the carcass using wood glue or wood brads. A frame should be secured with wood glue while it dries. Wood brads are used wherever there is a void to attach the frame. Using wood putty on the holes is a good idea if you want to make them invisible.

They can be made in various widths

The cabinet's design is dependent on the face frame. A frame can be made in a variety of widths from 3/4" to 2". Face frames are made of 1 inch thick wood. They are often attached using a pocket screws joint. You can also choose whether you want the frame to be square or beaded. You can also choose the size and number openings. Talk to a Customer Services Specialist to discuss the options and make the right choice for your cabinet.

They can be attached to a case using pocket hole joinery or PVA glue

Both PVA glue and Kreg's pocket hole joinery are effective ways to attach face frames to a case. To conceal the frames, you can use 3/8" plugs or dowels to attach them to the case. If you want to get the best results, make sure the frames are made of wood from a different species. Melamine-coated particleboard is an alternative that's more durable.

FAQ

What is the average time it takes to finish furniture?

It depends on the type of wood you choose, the complexity of the design, and the amount of finishing you apply. Hardwoods, on the other hand, are more durable than softwoods. Hardwoods tend to be more expensive that softwoods. However, they are stronger and more resistant to moisture. Finishing furniture can take anywhere from one week up to three months.

Can I refinish my own furniture?

Yes! There are many different ways to refinish older furniture without the need for professional help. Here are some suggestions:

Use sandpaper to remove scratches and stains. Then wipe down the surface with a clean cloth.

Apply clear polyurethane varnish. Allow to dry thoroughly before moving furniture.

Acrylic paint can be used to paint furniture.

Instead of painting, use stain. Furniture will look richer with the stain.

Apply shellac wax. You can protect your wood with wax and give it shine.

Where can you buy hardwood lumber?

Home Depot can sell hardwood lumber. They sell all kinds of wood products, including flooring, cabinets, furniture, etc.

A wide range of engineered hardwoods are also available, such as Ipe and Brazilian Cherry (Pau d'Arco), Mahogany and Swietenia Macrophylla.

You can search Google for hardwood lumber to find them online.

Statistics

  • If your lumber isn't as dry as you would like when you purchase it (over 22% in Glen Huey's opinion…probably over 10-15% in my opinion), then it's a good idea to let it acclimate to your workshop for a couple of weeks. (woodandshop.com)
  • The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) estimates that the number of jobs for woodworkers will decline by 4% between 2019 and 2029. (indeed.com)
  • Overall employment of woodworkers is projected to grow 8 percent from 2020 to 2030, about as fast as the average for all occupations. (bls.gov)
  • Woodworkers on the lower end of that spectrum, the bottom 10% to be exact, make roughly $24,000 a year, while the top 10% makes $108,000. (zippia.com)

How To

How to stain wood

Stain wood is a process that involves applying chemicals to the surface of wood, which changes its color. This chemical reaction changes the wood's color from white to brownish. Although oak is the most popular type of wood to stain, there are many other types that can be used.

You can apply wood stains in many different ways. Some methods include mixing the stain along with a solvent like turpentine and then applying the mixture to the wood by brushing or spraying. Other methods use a solution of water and dye applied directly to the wood. It is possible to mix stain into varnishes and paints, making it part of the finishing coat.

Preparing the surface for staining wood is the first step. You must clean the wood well to remove any grease or dirt that might interfere with the application of the stain. Sanding smoothens scratches and rough spots. The next step is to determine the type of stain you would like to use. There are two main types of stain: non-penetrating and penetrating. Penetrating stains penetrate deeper into the wood than non-penetrating ones, making them ideal for dark colors such as mahogany. Penetrating stains are best paired with lighter colors, such as maple.

After deciding on the type of stain, you want to apply, prepare your tools. Because you can spread the stain evenly with a paintbrush, it is ideal for applying them. It is a good idea to have rags on hand in case you need them to clean up any stains that may remain after you have finished painting. If you intend to mix the stain yourself you will need enough containers to hold all the components.

Once you have prepared all your materials, it is time to clean the areas where you will stain the wood. Clean the area with soap and warm water to get rid of dirt and grime. Use a dampened sponge and warm water to clean the entire piece. Be sure to get rid of all loose material, especially if staining is planned for darker wood.

Apply the stain next. Begin at one end and spray or brush the stain on the wood. You should work slowly and carefully. Continue moving along the grain until you reach your opposite end. You must be careful not to allow the stain to drip off the wood's edges. Let the stain dry completely before proceeding with the next steps.

Protect the painted surface with a coat polyurethane paint sealant. Apply three coats of polyurethane sealer. Let the third coat dry overnight before you sand the final coat.
