Statistics

  • If your lumber isn't as dry as you would like when you purchase it (over 22% in Glen Huey's opinion…probably over 10-15% in my opinion), then it's a good idea to let it acclimate to your workshop for a couple of weeks. (woodandshop.com)

How To

How to make wooden joints

This tutorial will teach you how to join two pieces wood together. We will be using the "pocket-hole joint", which involves drilling holes in wood and then gluing them together. If your wood has a straight grain, smooth surface, you can use this method. You might consider dowel joinery if your wood isn’t straight or flat. Here are the steps

  1. Drill Pocket Hole Joints. You will need to measure and mark the exact location of your pocket hole joint. Next, drill 3/4 inch holes in each end of each piece using a handheld drilling machine or jigsaw.
  2. Sand Smooth. Sanding the wood's edges will ensure that the joint doesn't split.
  3. Glue both sides together. Apply glue to both the ends of the wood. Allow the wood to rest for five minutes before clamping it together.
  4. Attach the Pieces together. After the glue has dried you can attach the pieces to form a flush joint.
  5. Trim Joinery. Trimming the joinery after glue has completely dried.

To be able to turn the pieces inside-out, leave enough room between them.
