How to Use Hand Planes

how to use kreg pocket jig

It is possible to learn how a hand plane works by using a few simple models. A smoothing plane is a great example. Smoothing planes can be used to contour curves and edges. Combination planes are also a popular choice for a woodworking project. A low-angle adjustable mouth block plane and a Jack plane can be purchased. Read on to learn more about hand planes.

Smoothing plane

A smoothing plane is a great tool for woodworking. However, there are some jobs that are better suited to a hand-held plane. A well-tuned, smoothing plane will produce a smooth and shiny surface. To use this type of plane effectively, you should have a solid body position and a steady downward pressure. There are a number of different types of smoothing planes, but you can start with a metal smoothing plane if you are a beginner.

Combination plane

The Lee Valley Veritas Combination Plane is a modern interpretation of the Stanley #45 combination plane, which was produced between 1884 and 1962. This hand plane was advertised as having seven functions: beading, plowing groove, creating dado or rebate housing, and even planed the sash of a window. The Veritas is an acceptable alternative to both planes.

Jack plane

Whether you're an experienced woodworker or a beginner, you'll find the simplest ways to use a jack plane useful. A jack plane's two irons work in tandem, and the large one is used to smooth out deep, narrow pieces of wood. Each iron has its own unique shape. One iron is used to remove the thickest pieces of wood. An additional iron is used to smoothen the surface and loosen edges.

Low-angle adjustable-mouth block plane

This low-angle adjustable mouth block plane is similar in design to the #60 Stanley planer but does not have an adjustable mouth. It is supplied with a turned rosewood front knob. The #60 is an adjustable mouth model that's generally less expensive than the #9 1/4. It will last a lifetime, but a Stanley block airplane of high quality is not worth much.

Grooving plane

A grooving, also called a plough, is a woodworking device that can be used to create grooves. It is designed for cutting very narrow irons. Some of them are only 3mm (1/8") thick. It is traditionally used to attach cabinet backs and drawer bases, as well as frame or panel construction. It can also be used to cut grooves into housing joints such as the one at the end of a shelf unit. For large furniture pieces, a special groove-making plane was used.

FAQ

What is the difference between a hobbyist woodworker and a professional woodworker.

Hobbyists enjoy creating things out of wood. Professionals tend to focus on the quality. Hobbyists often take pride in the creations they make and often share them to family and friends. Professionals spend hours researching design ideas before starting to work on a project. They'll pay great attention to details, from choosing the most suitable materials to finishing the work perfectly.

What's the time taken to finish a piece furniture?

It depends on the size of the piece of furniture. Smaller projects like boxes and picture frames can be finished within one day. Larger projects, like desks or dining tables require several days. It takes time and effort to properly stain the wood.

Where can I get free woodworking plans?

How do I choose the right tools for me?

When shopping for tools, it helps to think about your needs and preferences. Are you more comfortable with plastic or metal handles? What size of nails and screws do your hands use most? Are you more comfortable using power tools than hand tools?

How To

How to stain wood

The process of staining wood involves the application of chemicals to the wood's surface, which causes it to change its color. This chemical reaction causes wood to turn from whiteish to brownish. The most common type of wood used for staining is oak, although many other types of wood can be stained.

There are many ways to stain wood surfaces. Mixing the stain in a solvent such as turpentine and spraying it onto the wood is one method. Another method involves applying a solution of water to the wood. Stains can also be mixed into paints and varnishes, becoming part of the finish coating.

Preparing the wood surface is the first step to staining it. Cleaning the wood thoroughly removes any dirt or grease that could interfere with applying the stain. Sanding smoothens scratches and rough spots. The next step is to determine the type of stain you would like to use. Penetrating stains are different from non-penetrating. Penetrating stain penetrates deeper into wood than nonpenetrating, making them suitable for dark colors like mahogany. Non-penetrating stains work best with light colors like maple.

You will need to decide on the type of stain you want to use, and then prepare your tools. Because you can spread the stain evenly with a paintbrush, it is ideal for applying them. A few rags are also handy to clean up any spillages after you have finished painting. If you plan on mixing the stain yourself make sure that you have enough containers to hold the different components.

After you have prepared your materials for staining, clean the area. Use warm water and soap to clean away dirt and dust. You can wipe down the entire furniture using a damp rag with clean water. Take care to remove all debris and dirt, especially if you are planning on staining darker wood.

Next, spray the stain. Start at one end of the piece of furniture and brush or spray the stain onto the wood. Slowly and carefully work your way along the grain to reach the opposite end. Make sure that the stain does not drip off the edge of the wood. Allow the stain to dry completely before you move on to the next step.

To protect the painted surface, apply a coat of clear polyurethane sealant. Three coats are recommended for polyurethane. Let the third coat dry overnight before you sand the final coat.
